UNT Sacred Music Courses

At the University of North Texas in Denton, Dr. Jesse Eschbach, Professor of Organ, and Dr. Charles S. Brown, instructor in Sacred Music, announce a new Sacred Music sequence of four courses: (1) an introduction to the contexts of Western religious worship (called “The Languages of Worship”), and three courses where each course covers one of three historical periods in Western worship practices: (1) antiquity to 1510; (2) 1510 to 1820; and (3) 1820 to the present day. The evolution of ritual musical elements is at the center of each of these courses. Each of the courses is self-contained and there are no prerequisites. The course being offered this fall is (1) “Languages of Worship.” The first class session is September 1 at 1:00 p.m.

The courses can be taken for credit at either the graduate or undergraduate level. It is also possible to audit the classes. And we would very much like to have visitors at any of the individual class meetings. The classes meet on Fridays 1:00 p.m. – 3:50 p.m. in the Organ Recital Hall (Room 253) in the Music Building, 415 Avenue C, Denton, TX 76203. Note that the journey up 35-E to Denton is now much easier with the completion of toll lanes as well as improvements in the regular traffic flow. For information regarding these courses and individual class meetings, please contact Dr. Brown at 214- 499-7044 or by e-mail at: fantzi@msn.com

Ethan Gainer awarded FAGO’s highest overall score

We are excited to announce that Dallas Chapter AGO member, Ethan Gainer, achieved his FAGO certification this past May, 2017, and won the FAGO prize for the highest overall score in the exam. With that comes a gift of $600. He self-studied in preparation for his guild exams, using past exams and available articles and prepared materials by our national certification team. Congratulations to Ethan on this major achievement! Ethan is Organist/Assistant Director of Music for Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Rockwall, Texas and has 18 years of experience as a church musician, with long years of accompanying experience as well.

In 2015 he also won the top prize for the CAGO certification. Ethan holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Texas A&M University, with piano performance as his major instrument, and organ as secondary instrument, studying under Dr. John Burkett. Ethan lives in Greenville, Texas with his wife, Mary, and two young sons, John-Michael and James. You will be able to celebrate with Ethan and get better acquainted with him at our opening AGO meeting, September 25. Kudos, Ethan!

AGO Dallas’s First Guild Exam Meeting

Have you considered the possibility of discovering new paths to strengthen organ- and service-playing skills? If so, guild exams offer a great opportunity to accomplish those goals! Dallas Chapter AGO’s first Guild Exam meeting will be held Sunday, September 17 at 3:00 PM, at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church (9200 Inwood Road; NE corner of Inwood @ NW Hwy, Dallas) in the Sanctuary rear balcony. This first session will include an introduction into each of the 2018 exams, plus sharing of hymn-playing and sight-reading tips, led by Christine Bouton. So that we will have enough materials, please contact Sheryl Sebo at: slsebo@verizon.net or ssebo@llumc.org; 972-849-1950.

The second meeting, Sunday, October 22 at 3:00 PM, at the same location, will deal with other keyboard skills and repertoire. Guild exam meetings are open to all ages and skill levels – anyone is welcome, and refreshments will be served!

From The Dean – October 2017

The 2017 Regional Convention was a tremendous success – 327 attendees from 24 states, Hong Kong, Canada and Norway. The post-convention evaluation, taken by 157 attendees, affirmed what many of us felt that week – 92% indicated that they were “very satisfied” with the convention. The written comments were effusive with praise and appreciation to the steering committee and the chapter for crafting a truly memorable experience. Not surprising, 87% of the respondents indicated that Dallas should host a National Convention. Great! But, how about a long break first?

Now, we come out of the post-convention haze and begin a new year of chapter programming. Three outstanding recitals, masterclasses, worship, a lecture marking the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, plus other events are on tap. Let’s build upon the communal energy from the convention, and join in for all that there is to experience in this new year of activities.

See you soon!

Michael
