A Turtle’s Tribute:
Sandy Rhodes, a Dallas native, graduated from W.W. Samuell High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls. During 1970-1971, he studied German language and music at Regensburg, Germany, and in 1973 received his master’s degree in music from the University of North Texas in Denton,
Sandy worked for more than ten years as the continuing education program director at El Centro in the Dallas County Community College District. He worked as coordinator of the supernumerary corps for what is now the Dallas Opera from 1980 to 1985. At one time he was the company’s assistant stage manager.
Sandy also played violin with the East Texas Symphony in Tyler, the Irving Symphony and the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra in Louisiana.
He was a charter member of the Chorale. He sang with the Chorale through October 1992. During the first Chorale season, Sandy worked on the Advertising Sales Committee, and was Executive Secretary, a Member of Board of Directors and the Assistant to the General Manager.
Sandy died Saturday, August 7, 1993 at St. Paul Medical Center. Services were Monday, August 9, 1993 at Restland Wildwood Chapel in Dallas.
At the time of his death, Sandy was survived by a brother, Larry “Dusty” Rhodes of Bedford.
