Our friend Frances Balch (rest in peace September 9, 1991) knew Phil and spoke of him often. She was my friend and business partner furing the mid-80’s until her death. She often said that Phil was her barometer of what was to come. Those of you who knew Frances, Typesetter to the Stars, will remember.

A Turtle’s History

Phil was a charter member of the Chorale. He sang with the Chorale through June 1985. Phil was a totally inspiring individual. He was a fierce advocate for people with AIDS.

The TCC Member-of-the-Year Award was originally named The Phil Gerber Award.

He had an indomitable Spirit. He sang I’ve Got Rhythm as a member of the Showstoppers in the July 1982 production of The Music of America – 1982.

During his time with the Chorale, Phil served in several administrative positions as follow: 1st season – President 4th season – Vice President 3rd, 4th & 5th seasons – Member of Board of Directors 4th and 5th seasons – Assistant to the General Manager 5th Season; Director of Program Advertising. He also served on several committees: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th seasons – Advertising Sales 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th seasons – Program Design ; Layout 2nd season – Publicity 2nd season – Showstopper Logo 3rd season – Cover Design From the program for the concert BRAVO! in September 1985: “This evening’s performance is dedicated to Philip M. Gerber (1951-1985), a founding director of the Chorale”.

Phil passed away on July 1, 1985.
